Digital Pedagogy and Instructional Design, Content Development and Online Acquisition

T

his intervention area of the Uganda eLearning Initiative for Education Institutions focuses on building the capacity of instructors and Lecturers in digital pedagogy and instructional design, content development, and online acquisition.

In digital pedagogy, lecturers and instructors are trained in the use of technology in teaching and learning, how technology is used to make the virtual class learner-centered and engaging. Instructional design is aimed at equipping lecturers and instructors with skills in the designing and creating of content for eLearning. This is aimed at addressing outcome 2 of the Program:

Outcome 2: To improve the quality of online education and skilling in Education Institutions (EIs) through the implementation of innovative teaching approaches, interactive learning platforms, and ongoing professional development for Instructors and lecturers, leading to enriched educational experiences and enhanced learning outcomes for students

In the last 3 and a half years of program implementation, we have been able to build the capacity of 772 lecturers and instructors from 5 Universities and 2 TVETS through training in digital pedagogy and instructional design. Of these, about 48 were given further specialised training in instructional design to become mentors (champions) and trainers of trainers to mentor colleagues and peers in the same field. As a result of this, about 184 quality courses were developed, digitised and put online for students to access.

Set up eLearning Hubs

The second component of this intervention is the establishment of state-of-the-art eLearning hubs designed to support the creation of high-quality digital content for online courses. These hubs, located at Nkumba University (Central), Busitema University – Nagongera Campus (Eastern), and Mbarara University of Science and Technology – Kihumuro Campus (Western), serve as regional centers of excellence for digital content development. Each hub is equipped with advanced facilities, including soundproof studios, high-definition cameras, recording equipment, and high-end computers for content editing. They provide dedicated spaces for recording educational videos and audio, as well as support centres for lecturers, instructors, and students in areas such as digital course content creation and effective use of the Learning Management System. These hubs have had a remarkable impact on course content development and skills enhancement. For example, journalism students at Nkumba have practiced media production, students at Nagongera have developed innovative business ideas and hosted the first-ever virtual guild campaigns, while students at Kihumuro have gained expertise in content creation and supported their lecturers in digital content editing.
